The 2018 G20 summit occurred last month in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The summit consisted of a global discussion of the world’s 20 most industrialized and rising economies. One intriguing reality about this high-leveled gathering of the 20 richest and developed economies in the world is that they represent about 85% of the world’s gross domestic product, two-thirds of its population, three-fourths of international trade, and 80% of global investments. The represented nations consisted of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, Unified States, and the European Association. The additional visitors welcomed by Argentina were Chile, Jamaica, Netherlands, Rwanda, Senegal, Singapore, and Spain since they retain the right as host to invite other non-members to the summit.
This year’s subject theme for the 2018 G20 summit dealt with the following three principles such as the future of work; infrastructure for development and a sustainable food future.
The major advancements and concerns that were raised by delegations at the 2018 G20 summit were:
- There was a call for reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO);
- Agreement by the US and China to have a 90-day truce in their ongoing trade war dispute;
- Leaders putting pressure on Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the assassination of the Saudi newspaper columnist, Jamal Khashoggi.
- Pressuring of Russian President Putin by Western leaders regarding the seizure of Ukrainian naval vessels and crews. (Each side accused the other of being responsible for the standoff);
- 19 of the 20 nations signed the Paris climate accord (The US held out as President Trump refused to agree); and
- President Trump signed the new North American Trade Pact with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
