Write for Us

We have three peer-reviewed writing platforms for authors/analysts to submit their work:

  • Featured Articles and Essays
  • Intelligence Briefs
  • Background Reports

PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS:

The Society for Defense and Strategic Studies (SDSS) at American Military University (AMU/APUS) invites both members and non-members to submit article contributions to the Fulcrum Global Editing Team.

Submissions will go through a peer-review process. All participants in authorship, as well as the editorial and peer review staff, will work in tandem to produce a peer-reviewed product that is based on both their interests and/or experiences that are either academic or professional oriented.

Type of Pieces We’re Looking For:

We look for people who have backgrounds, areas of expertise, and great intellectual interests in a wide variety of topics and themes such as regional studies (the Middle East, East Asia, Europe, Eurasia, the Americas, and Africa), geopolitics, defense, homeland security, security studies, intelligence, cybersecurity, terrorism, and other areas of defense and national security issues.

In addition, we want pieces that are timely, relevant and have long term staying power. Also, they should be well-thought-out and are capable of utilizing a big-picture perspective as well as being written in language that is clear, succinct, and eloquent for the audience’s reading experience.

Writing Guidelines:

  • Topics relate to the national security of the United States or how foreign affairs/events affect U.S. national security;
  • Topics pertain to current national security strategy needs, trends, and goals;
  • Must be new and original content;
  • Can build onto previous papers by adding new ideas and themes;
  • Written in a narrative, persuasive, and direct tone with the reader experience in mind;
  • Essays should be analytical and factual. No opinion-only pieces allowed;
  • Keep it non-bias/non-partisan oriented;
  • Must be well-researched with supporting facts;
  • Pen Names are NOT allowed.
  • Essays/Articles word length should be 800 to 2000 words;
  • Intelligence Briefs word length varies between 900 to 2000 words; and
  • Background Reports word length should be 500 to 750 words.

Peer Review Roles: Let us know if you are mainly interested in a Peer Review Role. Please send a message regarding your interest, bio, and/or resume to give us an idea of your knowledge and/or experience in xyz fields, issues, and topics that you are interested in focusing on.

Pitch or Submission Instructions

Pitches & Query Letters: This is for people who are still in the development stage of their submissions and want to send a pitch or a proposal to the editing team that ensures there is interest in publishing their piece. It also is an opportunity to gain valuable feedback on how to develop the desired format of the piece that is best for the publication and its readers.

    • Your pitch should be 1-2 paragraphs long and should detail the topic focus; the relevance of the topic; and how you plan to outline and format your article to ensure it has a cohesive flow for the reader

Article Submissions: Please send your submissions in MS Word format so they can be reviewed and edited more easily.

Citation Style in Submissions: Chicago-Turabian

Bio and/or Resume: Please provide a bio and/or resume in MS Word format that can be used for assessing roles and projects based on expertise, etc. It will also be used for the bio section at the end of articles and analytical pieces as well as part of the Staff Page description.
